O’Rourke’s Driver Awarded in San Antonio’s Safest Driver Contest
September 25, 2018

San Antonio, TX - The City of San Antonio, Vision Zero and USAA hosted a competition to find San Antonio's Safest Driver. The contest, held from June 11 through September 3, rewarded safe drivers with cash prizes totaling more than $60,000. We are proud to announce that our Service Representative, Juan Jasso, was awarded one of three grand prizes!

A total of 14,149 drivers signed up for the contest by downloading an app to their phones that monitored driving behavior. For three months, the app scored each trip based on speed, acceleration, braking, cornering and phone distraction. The safer you drive, the higher your score.

The app provided the City’s Transportation and Capital Improvements department with useful data to help educate the public and plan future road improvements that will keep motorists and pedestrians safer.

The grand prize winners in three categories went to Jose Luna for overall safest driver; our very own, Juan Jasso, for safest military driver, and Sergio Balderas for least distracted driver. Winners were awarded a $10,000 cash prize at an event attended by more than 100 other participants and winners in other categories of the first-ever safe driving contest.

Juan did more than just put his phone in the passenger seat and ignore it while driving. Here is an idea of what Juan did to be named one of San Antonio’s Safest Drivers:

Over 11,000 miles without Speeding
Over 14,000 miles without a Hard Acceleration
Over 20,000 miles without Hard Braking
Over 22,000 miles without Hard Corner
Over 22,000 miles without a Distraction

"Safe Driving is a choice we make even before we get in the driver’s seat,” Juan said when asked what he does that he feels could benefit other drivers . “I make the decision, before I get in the truck, that once I am in there, my phone is going to be placed in the passenger seat.....and I am only going to answer it when absolutely necessary and while using a hands-free Bluetooth device.”

We are incredibly proud of Juan's allegiance to safety, which is one of our Five Core Principles that all of our employees are asked to use as a guideline to conduct their daily work lives. Thank you, Juan, for your commitment to making our roadways safer each day.
